What Are Laser Treatments?

Laser treatments use concentrated light to focus on specific areas of your skin. Trained professionals in medical offices or med spas do them. These treatments can be adjusted to match your skin type and the condition being treated. Some lasers are light and gentle, others go deeper to target more serious issues.

There are different kinds of lasers depending on how deep they need to go and what they’re meant to treat. Laser treatments are reasonably common. At our Med Spa in Oak Brook, we specialize in CO₂ Laser Resurfacing to help your skin look young and fresh again.

How Do Laser Skin Treatments Work?

Laser skin treatments use concentrated beams of light to treat specific problems in the skin without damaging the surrounding tissue. The type of laser and how strong it is depends on what you’re trying to treat.

For resurfacing, the laser gently heats the water in your skin cells. This creates tiny, controlled injuries that trigger your body’s natural healing process. As your skin repairs itself, it produces more collagen, tightens, and reveals smoother, fresher-looking skin.

When treating redness or brown spots, the laser focuses on the color. The heat breaks down things like broken blood vessels or patches of extra pigment, which your body then slowly clears away on its own.

There’s also a gentler type called low-level or cold laser therapy for the face. It works by boosting cell activity. It helps with blood flow, inflammation, and healing – great for issues like acne, rosacea, or scarring.

Types of Cosmetic Laser Treatments

There are different types of laser skin treatments, and each one is made to handle specific skin concerns – like fine lines or skin tone. What works best for you depends on your skin, what you’re trying to improve, and how much recovery time you’re willing to allow. Below are the most common types of cosmetic laser treatments and their uses.

What to Expect During a Laser Treatment Procedure

First, you’ll have a consultation with your provider to discuss what you want to treat and the kind of results you’re hoping for. They’ll take a look at your skin and help choose the laser treatment for the face that makes the most sense for you. You might be asked to avoid sun exposure or certain products for a few days before your appointment.

On the day of your treatment, the provider will clean the area that’s getting treated. If the laser is intense or you’re working on a larger area, they might use a numbing cream.

You’ll wear protective goggles to shield your eyes, and the provider will adjust the laser settings to match your skin type and needs. Then, they’ll glide the laser over your skin using short pulses. You might feel a little warmth.

The entire session can last anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour, depending on the area being treated. Afterward, they may apply something cool or soothing to help calm your skin.

It’s normal for your skin to look red or feel tender for a few hours or even a couple of days. It can feel like a mild sunburn. With stronger lasers, you might see some peeling or swelling too. Your provider will give you aftercare tips to better care for your skin.

You may see a difference after one session, but most treatments are more effective when done in a series, especially for more significant concerns.

Laser Skin Therapy: Recovery and Aftercare

At our med spa, we’ll walk you through exactly how to care for your skin. That usually means using gentle products and avoiding hot water, sun exposure, and anything too harsh. Recovery time can vary. In most cases, it takes a few sessions to get the full results.

Some people notice changes after just one visit, while others need 5 to 10 sessions, especially for deeper concerns. The results last a long time.

What are the Side Effects of Laser Treatment on the Face

Cosmetic laser treatments are safe for most people when done by someone trained, but your skin might react a bit afterward – especially on the face, since it’s more sensitive.

It’s pretty standard to have some redness and slight swelling. That usually fades within a few hours or a couple of days. Your skin might also feel tight or a little dry while it heals, which is expected.

If the laser skin treatment was for pigmentation or texture issues, you may notice some light peeling or flaking as the old skin sheds. Don’t pick at it – let it come off on its own. And be careful with sun exposure; your skin will be more sensitive, and it’s easier to burn.

Less common side effects include things like scabbing, blistering, or patches of skin that get darker or lighter. These are rare, but deeper cosmetic laser treatments can carry a slightly higher risk. Be sure to follow the aftercare advice your provider gives you.

Most of these effects are mild and temporary.
